SpoIIR is designated stage II sporulation protein R. A comparative genome analysis of all sequenced genomes of Firmicutes shows that the proteins are strictly conserved among the sub-set of endospore-forming species. SpoIIR is a signalling protein that links the activation of sigma E to the transcriptional activity of sigma F during sporulation.
